Coasters seem to come and go in fashion, but I know a few diehards who wouldnt think of setting down a glass without a coaster underneath. These are also such great projects for Beginners because of their simplicity. You can use them alone, or seam them together to form a placemat or even table runner. Make enough and you have a passable afghan, too!

Well, I am sure I am not going to be the first person to say they came up with this idea- but, I like to have my coasters extra stiff so they really hold shape and don't flop. That being said, how about buying that plastic netting used to needlepoint and cut them into appropriate sized squares? Then proceed to make TWO pieces, one for front and one for back, with the plastic sandiched between the two?
