How Long Should a Crochet Scarf Be? (Sizing Charts)
Learn the best length for a crochet scarf of all sizes! Includes how to size crochet scarves for all styles and sizes (including men, women, and children)!
Much like any other type of crochet pattern, crochet scarves come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. You can crochet a super short scarf or a crazy long one. Remember when super scarf patterns were trending? There are no exact rules for how long a crochet scarf should be.
The old rule of thumb for scarf length was that a crochet scarf should be as long as a person is tall. This ensures you can wrap it around a few times comfortably. This info is not helpful, however, when you are making a crochet scarf for someone else!
The average length of a crochet scarf pattern is 65 inches long. This accounts for a variation between men and women. A crochet scarf for women should be anywhere between 54 and 65 inches long. A scarf for men should be about 70 inches long.
Below, you will find charts explaining the ideal lengths for style, men, women, and children. We also asked popular crochet bloggers their opinion about scarf sizes, so be sure to check out what these brilliant crocheters had to say. Unsurprisingly, men's scarves are usually longer than patterns created for women. This size is simply based on the fact that the average man is larger than the average women. Use the following measurements as a guideline. It is better, however, to keep whoever is going to wear the scarf in mind.
Scarf Size | Length |
---|---|
Women | Short |
Men | Wraps Once |
Long | Wraps Twice |
Scarf Length for Children
Scarf lengths differ for children, as well! When crocheting for a child, you want to make sure that the scarf is long enough to be cozy but short enough so that it is not cumbersome. The sizes below should act as a good guideline. We do not recommend crocheting scarves for children under the age of 3 or 4 as they can be a choking hazard.
Scarf Size | Length |
---|---|
Women | Short |
Men | Wraps Once |
Long | Wraps Twice |
Crochet for Kids Tip
When making a crochet scarf for younger children, keep in mind that an extra long scarf can be a choking hazard, especially on the playground. While wrapped scarves might be cute and cozy on kids, it might be better to opt for a shorter scarf.
It can also help to tuck the excess scarf in your kiddo's coat before they go outside to play.
How Long is the Perfect Crochet Scarf? (Bloggers Speak)
We asked a few of our favorite bloggers and designers the perfect length for a crochet scarf. Here's what they said:
-
Make them extra long!
"I love extra long scarves ... the type you can wrap around you and even drape over your shoulders when feeling especially chilled."
Kara, Petals to Picots -
Make it as long as you want. There are no rules.
"I don't follow any rules when it comes to the length of my scarves. I prefer to let my creativity guide me in most of my designs. Sometimes it means adding more rows and sometimes it means a lot of frogging. Either way, once I put that scarf around my neck and it feels "right", that's how I know when to stop."
Erica Fedor, Highland Hickory Designs -
Triangle scarves should be (at least) 50" across.
"I go off the general principle that a good triangle scarf size is at the minimum approximately 50” across. However, I like my scarves to be large enough that when I have it around my neck the ends are far enough forward to help keep the scarf in place without issues. This may depend upon the pattern itself or if I have decided to add tassels to the ends to help anchor the scarf in place. "
Tonya Bush, Nana's Crafty Home -
Skinny scarves can be worn in all sorts of ways. So, make it for the length of your intended wear!
"Quick tip: skinny scarves shouldn't be limited to the neck. They can be worn as a waist belt, a head wrap... whatever you will."
Rose Obom, Loopingly Made -
It depends on the scarf! So, check the designer notes.
"When I designed the 3-Way Infinity, I knew I wanted it to be multifunctional and I particularly wanted it to be used as a bridal wrap. So I would say that this scarf is longer than your average scarf. To custom size it, I put in the notes of the pattern how to measure."
Juli Anne, Once Upon a Cheerio -
Make the scarf as long as the wearer is tall.
"I always aim to make my scarfs the same length as the person, wearing it, is tall. So if it is for a woman who is 5'8" I'll make it approx 68" long (it will measure half that for an infinity scarf after it is seamed together). "
