Excuse me please, but what is different about a ordinary shawl and a prayer shawl?

You can use any ordinary shawl pattern to make a prayer shawl. The act of giving it away to provide comfort to another turns it into a prayer shawl. The name comes from religious people who say a prayer asking for a blessing on the recipient. Churches may even have a priest bless the shawls before they are given to sick or elderly people.

When we do prayer shawls we are intentional in thinking about the person who will receive it and say extra prayers while actually making the shawl.

Hi myramahm, this is a good question, and sylviabullock 0624 169 gave a great answer! There is not a difference in design between a prayer shawl and an ordinary shawl. A prayer shawl is meant to show love and compassion for someone battling an illness or going through a tough time. Many charities collect prayer shawls to donate to someone in need. You can read more about prayer shawls and find some of our favorite prayer shawl patterns here: https://www.allfreecrochet.com/Prayer-Shawls/11-Easy-Crochet-Prayer-Shawls. Just another great ebook. It's packed full of beautiful ideas and tips and pictures. Most of the prayer shawls pictured are very easy to make. The instructions are all very well written. They are very easy to follow and turn out some beautiful shawls. Thank you for sharing all of these great patterns.

So, the Trinity Stitch Prayer Shawl is so beautiful. I too, would choose a yarn that is an ombre or a yarn that is variegated. If I wanted to jazz it up quite a bit, I would pick Vanna's Choice Glamour yarn with the metallic flecks built right in to the yarn strands. I did not know that three single crochets together were called a trinity stitch! Neat!

This is such a wonderful idea. I like the thought of making these for someone in times of need. Is there a charity organization that accepts these? What colors would you suggest? Bright to cheer someone up? Or more subdued?

A beautiful free ebook, containing patterns for seven prayer shawls. I like the very first one we can make these shawls for ourselves or to give as a gift. There are patterns for different shapes of shawls. Instructions seem to be clear. Explanation of special abbreviation is given for each pattern.

I made The Crochet shawl of Your Dreams and there is a correction I would like to add. In the Crenellation Edging, row 5 should read Ch 6, sk 3 dc, sc in next ch-4 sp, chain 4 2 times , sc in ch-6 sp, turn. With that addition, this shawl makes up very pretty!
