Garden Gnome Kid Costume

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)
Directions are for size 4 years. Changes for size 6 years are in parentheses.
MATERIALS:
- Red Heart Super Saver: 1 skein each 319 Cherry Red A, 313 Aran B, 321 Gold C.
- Crochet Hook: 5mm [US H-8].
- Yarn needle, stitch markers, sewing needle and matching thread, two 2” buttons, two 3½” buttons.
SIZE:
Finished Hat Circumference: 22 (24)”.
GAUGE:
12 sts = 4”; 15 rows = 4” in single crochet. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
Special Stitch
rev sc = Work sc in opposite direction (from left to right if you are right handed, and from right to left if you are left handed).
HAT
With A , ch 3; join with slip stitch in first ch to form a ring.
Round 1 (Right Side): Work 6 sc in ring—6 sc. Place marker for beginning of round. Move marker up as each round is completed.
Rounds 2 and 3: Sc in each sc around.
Round 4: Work 2 sc in each sc around—12 sc.
Rounds 5–7: Sc in each sc around.

BEARD AND HAIR
With B, ch 30.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—29 sc
Row 2: Ch 5, sc in next st (buttonloop made), [ch 6, skip next st, sc in next st] 2 times, [ch 8, skip next st, sc in next st] 10 times, ch 6, skip next st, sc in next st, ch 6, skip next st, (sc, ch 5, slip st) in last st (buttonloop made), turn—4 ch-6 spaces, 10 ch-8 spaces, and 2 ch-5 buttonloops.
Row 3: Ch 1, skip ch-5 buttonloop, (sc, 5 dc, 4 hdc) in each of next 2 ch-6 spaces, (sc, 7 dc, 4 hdc) in each of next 10 ch-8 spaces, (sc, 5 dc, 4 hdc) in each of next 2 ch-6 spaces, turn; leave buttonloop unworked.
Row 4: Ch 1, working in front of the sts of Row 3 and into the skipped sts of Row 1, sc in first skipped st, *ch 5, sc in next skipped st; repeat from * across, turn—13 ch-5 spaces.
Row 5: ,Ch 1, (3 sc, dc, 3 sc) in each ch-5 space across, slip st in end of piece. Fasten off.
SUSPENDERS (make 2)
Note: Suspenders are worked from side to side. The first suspender is worked, and a loop is worked across the front ,edge of the suspender. Then the piece is divided (in Row 6), ,and the second suspender is worked, and another loops is ,worked across the front edge of the suspender.
With C , ch 75 (79).
Row 1: ,Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ,turn—74 (78) sc.
Rows 2–4: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
First Front Loop: Working in ends of rows across side of piece, slip st across side edge to corner, ch 10, turn, skip over the side edge and slip st in beginning corner (at end of Row 4), turn, 12 sc in the ch-10 space (front loop made), turn, slip st across side edge again back to beginning corner.
Row 5: Sc in first st of Row 4 and each st across, turn.
Row 6: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 20 sc, ch 55 (59), turn—20 sc and 55 (59) ch.
Row 7: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch and st across, turn—74 (78) sc.
Rows 8–10: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
Second Front Loop: Ch 10, working across side edge, skip ends of first 4 rows, slip st in end of Row 6 (at corner), turn, 12 sc in the ch-10 space, slip st in corner. Fasten off.
Back Tab
Join C with sc in end of Row 1 (at corner), ch 20, sc in 5th ch from hook (buttonloop made), sc in next 15 ch, sc in same space as first sc. Fasten off. Sew button to end of Row 10, opposite buttonloop.
FINISHING
Place hat on child, and hold beard around child’s face and chin. Place markers on hat at each end of beard. Remove hat and sew one small button to inside of hat at each marked location; button beard to hat. Sew large buttons to the outside of trousers to which suspenders will be but - toned. To wear suspenders, loop the back tab through the belt loops at the back of the pair of trousers and button. Bring the front suspenders over the shoulders to the front and slip the front loops over the buttons sewn to the trousers. Weave in ends.
