8 Crochet Face Mask Patterns

DIY face masks are in high demand. If you haven't been able to find masks to purchase and can't sew, then crochet may be of help to you during times of need.

We've compiled a few of our favorite masks to crochet for this collection of 8 Crochet Face Mask Patterns. Find a few pretty but utilitarian mask options or fashionable and stylish face masks that you'll enjoy putting on every time it's needed.

When it comes to making your own mask protection, fabric masks are preferred because they do not have holes. However, crochet masks, especially with a filter pocket or fabric layers are the next best thing. Plus, these masks can be reused when the weather gets chilly.

So, take a look at the collection of DIY masks below and choose which one works the best for your skill level (though nearly all of these are beginner-friendly). There's even a few for children specifically.

As a bonus to this list of crochet mouth masks, we're also sharing a few crochet ear savers. These fast little patterns help to keep the elastic from hurting the mask wearer's ears with prolonged wear.

Many crocheters are making masks and ear savers for charity or hospitals, along with their friends and family.

Editorial Notes: In settings where face masks are not available, healthcare professionals (HCP) might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered personal protective equipment (PPE), since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option.

Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.

We are simply providing options for those looking but want to make it clear that this will not prevent you from spreading or contracting any viruses. It's up to you whether or not you want to wear a mask. We do suggest staying inside and away from others as much as possible during these troubling times. See right below for vital information from the CDC.

What is the best yarn weight for face masks?
The best yarn weights for crocheted face masks is weight 3 which is light/DK or weight 4, which is medium/worsted weight/Aran. You don't want it too thick or too thin, which is why sticking to a light or medium weight yarn is best.

CDC Face Covering Information PDFs

The CDC has provided three free PDFs concerning face coverings. Between these three charts, learn about face coverings compared to other types of masks, when and how to wear coverings, the do's and don'ts, and how to interact with others during a pandemic.

UPDATE 2/2021: From the CDC, "During January 2021, CDC conducted experimental simulations using pliable elastomeric source and receiver headforms to assess the extent to which two modifications to medical procedure masks:
1) wearing a cloth mask over a medical procedure mask (double masking) and 2) knotting the ear loops of a medical procedure mask where they attach to the mask’s edges and then tucking in and flattening the extra material close to the face (knotted and tucked masks), could improve the fit of these masks and reduce the receiver’s exposure to an aerosol of simulated respiratory droplet particles of the size considered most important for transmitting SARS-CoV-2." Easy Face Mask

Available in both adult and child sizes, we like this mask design because it reaches further than most across the face, minimalizing the gaps to the nose and mouth. Of course, since the yarn and crochet design will still allow gaps, it's recommended to supplement it with fabric or paper behind.
