It's soft and even has pockets so that you can carry little things you might otherwise lose. We love the effects of the multicolored yarn that the pattern recommends. You will truly work up a unique shawl for yourself or even as a gift for a friend or family member. Anyone would love a comfy shawl like this one.
Crochet HookN/15 or 10 mm hook
Yarn Weight(5) Bulky/Chunky (12-15 stitches for 4 inches)
Crochet Gauge8 sts + 9 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in sc.
8 sts + 6 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in (sc, dc) pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

In my opinion, what a nice gift for a senior in a nursing home or an assisted living facility. You need those pockets for your candies and tissues! My gramma always did. Great yarn to use for a shawl such as this. It probably wraps around the neck and hangs down the front only.

This is interesting. When I think of shawl, this is not the picture I get in my head. I like the concept of pockets and the color is also different. I am like Morehouse17, I would love to see a picture of that this looks like from the back.

So until I read the directions for this lounge around crochet shawl I thought this item was a sweater or a fancy scarf with pockets. If I am reading the directions correctly, there is no back to this project. A second picture really would have been a plus. I even took the time to find the pattern at Lion Brand and no such luck with an other picture.

I love this wrap. Sometimes I feel chilled, but not enough to need a sweater. This covers my shoulders enough that I am comfortable again. It is easy to follow this pattern, and it is quick to make. The collar makes it stylish enough to wear out of the house, and the pockets are a nice addition.

On doing row 1 on the collar I did the DC in the back look and the collar lays flatter and very nice looking. Also on the top front on the pockets I would have made the SC 4 instead of 3 and I used a shell pattern instead of DC for the body. It really looks sharp thankyou for such a sweet shawl pattern!

I love this pattern, and have been making this Lounge Around Crochet Shawl for years. But I have called it my pocket scarf, not shawl because it is more for the neck and hands. I made mine with bigger pockets then the pattern calls for by 8 rows. This pattern is very well written and a easy to follow. Thank you so much for sharing this free crochet pattern.

Thanks for your helpful suggestion on this pattern! I can see where it's more for neck and hands. That's what attracted it to me in the first place. I think I'll add on the additional rows to make the larger pockets too!!! Both of my daughters are known for their cold hands and we constantly battle to keep them warm. This is a nicely written pattern. Thanks allfreecrochet for helping keep us warm!

cute, but does it cover the back?

Looks to me like it's more of a big scarf than a shawl - finished measurement is 9x58 inches...

No it does not cover the back. It does cover your shoulders. I just finished making one and I love it.
