Spirited iPad Crochet Cozy

Easy

Crochet HookH/8 or 5 mm hook

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Crochet GaugeGAUGE: 11 sc = 4 (10 cm); 12 rows = 4 (10 cm). CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Materials:

  • Red Heart® Team Spirit™: 1 skein
    • 948 Green
    • 948 Gold
  • Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 5mm [US H-8]
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker
  • One 1¼” (32 mm) button
  • Sewing needle and thread to match


Directions are for size Small. Changes for size Large are in parentheses.

Cozy measures 7 (9)” wide x 9½ (11)” long [18 (23) x 24 (28) cm].


Special Stitch: sc2tog = [Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

Special Technique: Join with sc = Place a slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.

Cozy
Note: Work all stitches throughout both pieces in back loop only

Back
Ch 2.
Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn—1 sc.
Row 2 (increase row): Ch 1, 3 sc in sc, turn—3 sc.
Row 3 (increase row): Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next st, 2 sc in last st, turn—5 sc.
Row 4 (increase row): Ch 1, sc in first st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in last st, turn—7 sc.
Row 5 (increase row): Ch 1, sc in first st, 2 sc in next st, sc in each st across to last 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in last st, turn—9 sc.

Repeat last row until each side measures 7 (9)” [18 (23) cm].


Next Row: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
Decrease Row: Ch 1, skip first st, sc in each st to last 2 sts, sc2tog, turn.
Repeat Decrease Row until 3 sts remain.

Last Row: Ch 1, skip first st, sc2tog—1 sc.

Button Band
Row 1: Ch 1, working in ends of rows across short end, sc in each row, turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
Repeat Row 2 until button band measures
2½” (6.5 cm) from Row 1. Fasten off.


Front
Work same as back to button band.

Buttonhole Band
Work half the number of rows as button band. Place marker on center stitch (if even number of stitches have been worked, place marker on first stitch closest to center).

Buttonhole Row: Ch 1, sc in each st to last st before marked st, ch 3, skip next 3 sts, sc in remaining sts, turn—1 ch-3 space.
Next Row: Ch 1, sc in each st to ch-3 space, 3 sc in ch-3 space, sc in remaining sts, turn.
Next Row: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
Repeat last row until front measures same as back. Fasten off.


Finishing
Joining Row: With wrong sides held together and working through both thicknesses and in ends of rows, join yarn with sc in first row, sc evenly around 3 sides working 3 sc in each lower corner. Fasten off. Weave in ends. Sew button to wrong side of back under buttonhole.
