The title of this post is a little misleading because while it is a fairly basic coffee cozy, its actually worked in a Basket Weave stitch pattern. Thats quite a step up from an ordinary Single or Double Crochet item. This is one of my favorite patterns though because I love the button and tab. Its stretchy enough to fit several mugs I own.

I love the use of the basket weave on this basic cozy. I think that that crochet technique gives a lot of texture and with such a small item every design element is a plus. I love the decorative button as well. Because it does not take a lot of material I know I can ease some of my stash with this quick project.

I was reading feverishly over the directions trying to discover if the button was functional. Here on the post about the basic crochet coffee cozy it lets you know that the button is purely decorative in the second sentence. I was thinking the cozy was adjustable to a particular cup. Sometimes I make things more difficult than they have to be.

Perfect gift for my coworkers - quick and easy! Made several of these using cotton - washes nicely which is great for any project where food or drink is involved. Everyone loved them! Perfect for teacher gifts as well!

I myself made 6 of these a few years ago to give away as Christmas gifts for my son's teachers. What I liked about it was the textured created by the basket weave stitch. It was not difficult at all. I am not sure where your confusion lies as far as the tab and button. I followed the pattern and it came out as pictured.
