Studio Messy Bun Hat
Studio Messy Bun Hat

"I have a lot of hair. Last winter when I first came across Messy Bun Hats, I knew I had hit on something which was for me! Now I can wear my hair up under a hat without looking like I belong in the twilight zone! This super quick messy bun hat is perfect for those winter days. It’s full of texture and can be made in any colour combination. The pattern also includes a video tutorial showing how to make a ribbed hat band so all bases are covered!"

I have seen a bunch of different messy bun hat patterns, and have even made a few of them. I am looking for a good pattern that will work up quickly, and I think I might have to try this one. I bought some of the new Pantone yarn to use for the hat. Hopefully it works out well, because I do not think I have any other tan colored yarn to make a hat out of.

Unlike most of the Messy Bun Hats Ive seen, this one does not start out by enclosing an elastic band. The designer explains her interesting stitch sequence, and as for the ribbing at the bottom of the hat, shes even including an instructional video on the technique using this exact project. So that gives you a good idea of what the hat should look like before adding the brim.

I like the look of this Studio Messy Bun Hat. I have long hair down to my butt and some times I like to have it in a ponytail and normal hats just don't work. I have been wearing a lot of messy bun hats lately and love them. After reading the written pattern for this one, I know it will work now that the bugs have been worked out. The color choices are endless and that means you can have a hat for every outfit. There is a nicely done video on how to crochet the band part of the hat. So lets get started, what color or colors are you going to use? Thank you for sharing this free crochet pattern.

I would like to make this someday but dont understand about the first step. It says to chain 48, then it says you should have 40 sc sts in the next row. What happened to the 8 sts? Any one have any guesses?

Hi Penny, Since this is a linkout to a blogger's pattern, I would ask this question directly on the blogger's website where she can see and respond to the question. :) Good luck! Julia, AFC editor

This is such a cute idea! This is perfect for a fall day when you need to keep warm but still look cute.

Yes, I did know that we lose most of our body heat through our head when the weather is cooler. This messy bun hat would help protect from heat loss but also allow the hat to fit more snuggly because your hair is not being crushed. Great idea for any day but especially a mess hair day.
