Simple Edgy Messy Bun Crochet Hat
"This messy bun hat pattern has a very clean, traditional, and put together style. It uses a 3rd loop stitch combined with traditional single, double, and half double crochet stitches to create crisp, linear lines. The messy bun hat is unique enough in concept, but when paired with this simpler texture, it makes it the perfect item for friends who like a more minimalist look. You could even introduce a second color for alternating stripes to customize the look. This pattern is also versatile in that it can be made into a full beanie. This is a great pattern for all levels of crocheters."
NotesWorked from the top down in a spiral. Chains do not count as stitches. Do not join at the end of the row and do not turn. Instead, slip stitch in the back bump of the second chain. Use your stitch marker at the beginning of each round. Working in the 3rd loop is easiest when you crochet loosely.

This very basic Messy Bun hat, and the good news is that is only uses basic stitches. The trickiest bit is working in the 3rd Loop, aka the Back Bump. She describes it very well and even includes an embedded tutorial video. But I can tell everyone from experience that its easier to find that little stinker on some yarns than on others.

Messy bun hats are really popular and this version has a clean and traditional design. I'm sure anyone would love to receive this hat.

I like reading when a hat, headband, or messy bun hat is STRETCHY. You will achieve the stretch by the particular combination of stitches in the pattern! I am not normally minimalist in my wardrobe fashion choices, but there is something to be said for this hat. It's really a unisex hat! It can easily be adjusted to close up the top. You've got that choice, and i like the versatility of that.

This is a very clean and even pattern for a messy bun crochet hat. I, myself, prefer just the traditional hat over the messy bun hat, so I would not make this one for myself unless I played around with the stitches to close off the top and maybe add a cute pom-pom.
