Row 12 - 19: 1 sc in each sc. Ch1, turn. Finish off after last row. (7 sc each row)

Using you long beginning tail, sew your wedges together. You will want to be sure they meet at the bottom (wide) edge neatly. Don't worry if the points gap a little, as it will be covered later by the button. Don't worry about weaving in ends as you will hide them later also between the band and band lining.

The Band
Join black to any sc on the bottom edge.
Round 1 - 2: Ch1. Sc in same sc and in each sc around. Join with a sl st to turning chain. FO after second round. (70 sc each round)
Join white to any sc.
Round 4 - 9: Ch1. Sc in same sc and in each sc around. Join with a sl st to turning chain. FO after last round. (70 sc each round)
Note: Your count is very important in these white rounds. Your embroidery later will not line up if you are off even by one.
Join Black to any sc on the bottom edge.
Round 10: Ch1. Sc in same sc and in each sc around. Join with a sl st to turning chain. FO. (70 sc)

Embroidery
With a single strand of black, begin at the back and work your way around, cross-stitching according to pattern. Work in the bottom 5 ‘clean’ rows of white, ignoring the 1st row. With scrap pieces of your colors, place a stitch in the center of each diamond shape. Once all is stitched, turn the hat inside out and knot the ends of the color stitches to each other so the stitch will not slip out later.

With the hat right side out again, use a double strand of black to stitch a straight line between the wedges, taking care to not allow the neighboring color to peek to the wrong side of the stitching. If you begin at the band and stitch up and then back down, you will be able to hide the ends later in the band liner.

Button
With black, leaving a beginning tail, CH4 and join with a SL ST to form a ring. 10 SC in the ring, being sure to crochet over the tail as you go. Join with a SL ST and FO, leaving a long tail for sewing. Pull the beginning tail carefully to close the hole in the center and to make the button lie flat. Sew onto the center of the top of the hat, hiding the points of the wedges. Weave in end.

Band Liner
With black, ch 71.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch1 and turn. (70 sc)
Row 2 - 8: Sc in each sc across. Ch1 and turn. (70 sc each row)
Row 9: Sc in each sc across. Do not FO. (70 sc)

Place band liner inside the hat, aligning end stitch of liner with center back stitch of the band. SC through both layers around. FO leaving very long tail for sewing. Sew ends of liner closed, then stitch the top of the liner to the top black row on hat, tucking all the loose ends in as you go. FO and weave in end.
Note: The band will be a little padded and very thick and will keep your ears quite warm!

where is the "pattern" for the embroidery?

Hello! I was not aware the AFCP had added this pattern - I gave them some old patterns once. Anyway... I uploaded the graph to the ravelry listing that surprisingly showed up on my page. Here is the link to that. https//www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/circus-scr == ap-hat

Hi Jenna - we finally got our act together and joined Ravelry. Thanks for providing the graph!

It took longer than I thought it would to make and put together, but it looks good now its done. :-)
