This looks like a great pattern! But, as with many of the vintage patterns I've seen, they don't give the weight (US) or ply (UK) of the yarn. Luckily I did a search and found someone who has made them on Ravelry and they recorded what type of yarn they used; and they even made notes about the yarn and crochet hook they used: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/mens-afghan-stitch-gloves. Thank goodness for Ravelry! I hope this helps someone else who needs to know!
