Materials:
- RED HEART® Stardust:
- 2 skeins 1805 Blue A
- 1 skein 1623 Green B
- Crochet Hook: 4.25 mm [US G-7]
- Yarn needle
GAUGE: 20 sts = 4”; 14 rows = 4”. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
ABBREVIATIONS: A, B, C = Color A, Color B, Color C etc; ch = chain; dc = double crochet; hdc = half double crochet; mm = millimeters; sc = single crochet; st(s) = stitch(es); yo = yarn over; [ ] = work directions in brackets the number of times specified; * or ** = repeat whatever follows the * or ** as indicated.
NOTES:
- Foundation single crochet (fsc) = First St: Ch 2, insert hook under top 2 strands of first ch, yo, draw up a loop, yo, draw through 1 loop, yo, draw through both loops (first fsc complete). Remaining sts: Insert hook under both loops of previous st, yo, draw up a loop, yo, draw through 1 loop, yo, draw through both loops.
- Chain 2 counts as hdc throughout. All stitches are worked into the top and the back loop of the indicated stitch to form a ridge in the completed row.
Instuctions:
With A, Fsc 20; ch 2, turn to work into sc side of foundation ch.
Row 1: Hdc in the next 4 sts, *ch 1, skip next st, cl in the next st, ch 1, skip next st, hdc in the next 5 sts; repeat from * across; ch 2, turn – 2 cl, 4 ch-1 spaces, 15 hdc sts.
Row 2: Hdc in the next 4 sts, *cl in the next ch-1 space, ch 1, skip next st, cl in the next ch-1 space, hdc in the next 5 sts; repeat from * across; ch 2, turn – 4 cl, 2 ch-1 spaces, 15 hdc sts.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 following the headband stripe sequence until piece measures 18½” (20”) long. Fasten off.
Headband Stripe Sequence: For 18½” (20”) headband, work 9 (12) rows with A, 3 rows with B, 3 rows with A, 3 rows with B, 9 rows with A, 9 rows with B, 9 rows with A, 3 rows with B, 3 rows with A, 3 rows with B, 9 (12) rows with A.
Lining:
With A, fsc 20; ch 3, turn to work into sc side of foundation ch.
Row 1: Dc in each st across; ch 3, turn – 20 sts
Repeat Row 1 until piece measures 18½” (20”) long.
Fasten off.
Finishing:
With yarn needle, sew long edges of both pieces together.
Turn inside out. Sew ends of lining edge together, inserting needle in each st on each end. Sew the outside edges together in the same manner. Weave in ends.

cl usually means cluster stitch, although I don't see this explained in the pattern. Here's the website where it DOES define the cluster stitch http//www.redheart.com/free-patterns/warm-shine-sc == arf-headband Yarn is discontinued, too, I see. Oh well, there's plenty others out there to use!

I was wondering if you can just chain the 20 and then sc instead of doing the fsc. I don't seem to get the fsc stitch. Anyone that can answer this will be a great help. Thanks

Realize it's probably too late, but you CAN, if you want...chain 21. Then SC the next row. Chain 3 then continue with the HDC of the following row. OR Begin with a Chain 24, then start with the HDC row in the 4th chain from hook. (I think that's right -- or Chain 23, and start the HDC row in the 3rd chain from hook.) Ugh. Hope that helps a little!

This is confusing. I have been crocheting for a while and cannot figure out what this is supposed to look like. I can look at the picture but it does NOT look what I get when I have finished up to the 2nd row. Is there anywhere else that I can find help with this?

I think that I get very confused with the fsc and would like to have the pattern start with a chain which is what I'm used to.

Cl means "cluster". Usually made two dc, 2 chains, two dc. They name cluster the set of two duble crochet stitches. O hope this heped.

It says at the top that you use 1 or superfine yarn...I'm sorry but in the picture this just does not look like superfine to me...anyone tried this yet?

I've found the Red Heart patterns tend to have errors in them...thus the failure to explain the cluster stitch. I haven't done this yet, but I'll check their website to see if a corrected pattern has been published. Otherwise I agree that it looks like a popcorn-type cluster. What a cute pattern!

This is pretty and clever! I do have one question: with the detail on the abbreviations for all the usual stitches, did the "cl" directions get lost? If I had to guess, I would do a popcorn type cluster, but I cannot tell from the photo is that is the stitch called for. Member 0268230 said "so easy to follow" Can you help me with this?
