    Standard Crochet Stitches

When it comes to standard forms, there are about 100 crochet stitches. We've included a few less standard stitches for a total of 119.

These are shown using a teal color in the list above. If you're a beginner, you might recognize about a quarter or more of these. If you've been crocheting for a while, you will probably recognize about half or more. But we guarantee you won't know every single one of these!

    Crochet Stitch Variations

Now that we've shared the most common stitches, it's time to review variations. Now, when it comes to combining stitches, the options are ENDLESS. That's why this list will never truly be complete. Designers can combine many of the main 100 stitches to create a new variation.

We've pulled nearly every variation crochet stitch type we could find for this list. How many alternative crochet stitches are there? We came up with 30. These are shown using a blue color in the list at the top of the page.

As you peruse the list, you'll see that variations can involve a few different things:

Taking a crochet stitch and expanding or contracting the number of stitches to create it can cause a variation, thus a new type of stitch.

Altering the way the stitch is crocheted is another way to create a variation. Opening or reversing the stitch steps, for example, can help you to create a new stitch.

Finally, combining two stitches or a new technique with a stitch is another way to design a new stitch variation. The crazy or open shell stitch, or the split single crochet are a few examples.

    Crochet Stitch Techniques

Shown in a purple color in the list above, the crochet techniques are stitches in a way but, more correctly, these are techniques used in crochet. We came up with six techniques that some people think of as stitches.

    We will explain each below!

    1. Corner to Corner Crochet - Corner to corner isn't actually a stitch, though the most common type of stitch used for C2C is usually the same or similar.

Learn more about corner to corner and how to do it by reading our guide, What is C2C Crochet?

    2. Filet CrochetShown below! Filet crochet is creating an image or delicate design through crochet and can use different types of stitches as well.

Learn more about filet and how to do it by reading through our Filet Crochet Tutorial.

Image shows a gray carpet background with notebook and piece of loose paper with filet crochet designs and notes. On top of the paper is a small green filet crochet swatch, a crochet hook, and mechanical pencil.

    1. Slip Knot - This is the first step to crochet. It's how you get the yarn on your hook before starting to chain.

    2. Slip Stitch - A slip stitch is used to connect crochet while you work without adding height, like a normal stitch would.

Learn more about slip knots and slip stitches and how to do each by reading our guide, Crochet Slip Knot vs Slip Stitch Crochet.

    3. Virus Crochet - Trendy and unique, the virus crochet technique involves a crochet pattern that is created by continuing stitching around a center square, constantly building on itself.

Learn more about the virus technique and how to do it by reading our guide, What is a Virus Blanket?

    4. Whip Stitch - Shown below! Completed with a yarn needle, the whip stitch to join yarn is one of the fastest and easiest ways to combine your granny squares or other crochet pieces.

Learn more about it and how to do it by reading through our tutorial, How To Whip Stitch Crochet.

Image shows two hands whip stitching two green granny squares together with a blue yarn needle and yarn.
