PLUS! History of Tunisian Crochet
Tunisian crochet is also known as Afghan crochet, and it's worked up with a longer hook than in normal crochet. It's worked back and forth in rows, called forward and return passes, and the end result is a crocheted fabric that is a little less elastic than a normal crocheted result. The resulting design is thick and plush, which means that it's perfect for heavier items like winter items, pillows and afghans, like this Tunisian crochet baby blanket, and not ideal for finer works, like baby clothing or socks. Tunisian crochet can be a little tricky to master since you don't turn your work as you go, but once you get the hang of it, you'll find it's really not that hard (and is actually a little faster than regular crochet.

This is very pretty. It looks like quilt. I have been crocheting for 50 yeArs and have never tried this. I read the directions and it appears to be a little beyond me. I will need to practice a lot more before I attack these. So I am saving it until I am ready.

That is so beautiful! I have never seen this stitch before (and I'm old). I have seen that hook but didn't know what it was for. Thank you so much for sharing I just may have to give this a try. Maybe a pillow cover to start.

I have tried Tunisian and gave it up after a week of frustration. The pattern I chose was probably too ambitions for me (Redheart's Tunisian Mitered Throw) since I just learned how to crochet last summer (@58 it's better late than never). I will give this a try, maybe on a pillow so I don't get too frustrated. It is beautiful.

Adorable. Love all the colors in this blanket. Looks like a rainbow. I have not tried Tunisian crochet yet so I am not sure how easy it will be or if I would actually be able to do it well enough to complete this project. Looks very detailed, but I am willing to give it a try when I can.

This Rainbow Tunisian Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern looks extremely challenging but is attainable with a lot of patience. I need many hours to read and learn the Tunisian stitch. It helps that the instructions are just in front of the page complete with diagrams. This pattern is done in 8 colors using that special stitch called entrelac? Well, let's see if I will be able to learn this stitch at all. This baby blanket can also be done in colors of your choice. Thanks for this free pattern.

Actually, isn't this Entrelac crochet? I had made a comment on the Facebook page about the pattern in the picture, above, with the baby, being too hard for me, but I was having a brain-dead moment and said I couldn't master Tunisian crochet. But that's not true! I LOVE Tunisian crochet, and mastered it ages ago! It's Entrelac that's too hard for me, and I believe that's an Entrelac pattern above.

Could the foundation row be wrong or is it just me reading the pattern wrong

Looks like the foundation row number is wrong. I count 102 foundation stitches for the pattern as written (first strip has 2 triangles and nine squares). There should also be 10 squares in the even numbered strips (starting with second strip), not 8 as written, to fill in all the gaps from the first strip.
