Tiny Butterflies

This butterfly crochet pattern is one of the quickest patterns you will find this season. These Tiny Butterflies can be used as embellishments for any garment or piece of decor. Using single crochet and thread you can have the cutest crochet butterflies around.

Easy

Crochet Hook2 or 2.25 mm hook (steel)

Yarn Weight(0) Lace (33-40 stitches to 4 inches). Includes crochet thread.

Materials:

  • Any size yarn or thread, and any size hook
  • Hook: (For crochet thread, use size 2.5mm hook, for worsted weight use 5mm hook.)
  • Yarn needle

Instructions: Gauge is not important in this design.

1. Chain 8, single crochet in the 8th stitch from the hook. (Loop formed)
2. Chain 9, single crochet in the same stitch as the first single crochet. (2nd loop formed.)
3. Chain 9, single crochet in the same stitch. (3rd loop formed.)
4. Chain 7, single crochet in the same stitch. (4th loop formed.)
Fasten off. Tie the two yarn ends into a square knot. Trim off the excess yarn.

The area of single crochet stitches will be the center of the butterfly. Wrap a length of yarn around the center of the butter approximately 3 times, leaving a 3 inch length of yarn at the beginning.

Tie the two ends of the yarn into a square knot. (The yarn ends will be the antennae of the butterfly.) Tie knots in the yarn ends approx. 2 inch from the butterfly, and trim off the excess yarn.

Optional: For thread butterflies, the finished butterfly can be colored with permanent markers as shown in the photo.

a picture would be nice

Hi djhixson, The photo should be appearing now. :) Julia, editor for ALlFreeCrochet

These sweet butterflies would be a great introduction to crochet for kids. They are simple to make and would help children learn how to handle a crochet hook and yarn. Girls might find use butterflies as colorful embellishment for a sweatshirt or headband. I can also see gluing them to a scrapbook page or an invitation.

I <3 Emi's patterns :)
