History of Cowls
Did you know that the word "cowl" is derived from the Latin word "cuculla," meaning "hood?" Cowls were developed during the early-mid Middle Ages in Northern Europe as formal clothing for monks and others living a monastic life. Originally they were long, hooded clothing pieces with wide sleeves, but the word also could have referred to just the hooded part of a cloak. Over time, the cowl has adapted and changed, according to the times, to become the draping fabric around the neck that we know of today, as evidenced by the crochet cowl pattern shown here.

This cowl is very stunning! The stitch pattern is full of rich texture and the color of the yarn is absolutely vibrant! I wasn't convinced I could wear a cowl but now I have a blouse with a cowl neckline on it and I receive many compliments on it sooooo I think I'm going to give this one a try! There are many beautiful colors of this yarn to choose from...soooo many that with this being marked an "easy" pattern...choosing the color I want to create it in may be the most difficult part of this craft. But then again since it's rated "easy" maybe I'll make several in different colors!

The size of the stitch used is just right. It could be considered large by others' standards but it's the size I life for a cowl. You may add stitches to make this Chunky Crochet Cowl wider or longer or you can make it shorter and wear it close to the neck area to keep you warm on very cold days. Other colors may be used, solid vibrant, solid pastels, earth, it's your choice. Thanks.

Beautiful pattern and looking at the cowl who would ever believe that the pattern is rated Easy? I so love the open work look of this cowl design, very stylish and easy to wear to complement any outfit at all. I prefer my cowls closer around my neck so will have to see whether I need to use less chains, or perhaps more to give it an extra wind round my neck.

Very stylish cowl. The wine color is awesome. This looks like a pretty easy project that would work up quickly. I dont really need anymore cowls, but my friends also seem to appreciate it when I find a new pattern and try it out on a little happy gift for one of them. Thanks for sharing your free pattern with us.

This cowl is so cute and stylish. I love making cowls and scarves for gifts, and with all of the chains in this cowl, it would be a really quick project. This one is going on my to do list for sure.

I'm a beginner crocheter, but after looking at the pattern... I'm cautiously optimistic. I think I can do this one! This would make a great Christmas gift for my mom. The only question is... can I finish it in 2 weeks?

I'm a beginner crocheter too, and it only took me a few hours! Since you're using such a large hook and large yarn, it's a quick and easy knit! I did have to rip back a few times because I skipped 2 or didn't chain after the half double crochet, so make sure to count your stitches after each row! Saves a ton of time )

I have got to try this one and SOON. This is suitable for beginners as it's just half-double crochets and skipped stitches. You work a repeat of this row after row, so the bonus is that it is great for "handy work" while you're watching Netfilx. Or in my case, my favorite horror movies. She picked a great color, too.

Emily, I'm also loving how chunky this pattern is and the purple they choose for their example! I think this would look amazing in a dark maroon or very deep teal color as well!

Another great cowl pattern to try! This cowl gives such an elegant and delicate look even though it is crocheted using 14-ply super bulky yarn! If I understand the pattern correctly, the cowl is crocheted lengthwise for only 13 rows using 55 chains across to give a length of 42 inches and width of 14 inches.
