Hat Pattern

  1. Poodle Ears (make 2)
To get a rounded look to the ear, slightly decrease the loop length when working Rounds 6 through 8.

Round 1: Ch 2, make 6 sc in the 2nd chain from hook, join in first sc (6)
Round 2: Ch 1, make 2 LP ST in each st around, join in first LP ST (12)
Round 3: Ch 1, *make 2 LP ST in first st, LP ST in next st* repeat around, join (18)
Round 4: Ch 1, *make 2 LP ST in first st, LP ST in next 2 sts* repeat around, join (24)
Round 5 to 6: Ch 1, LP ST in each st around, join (24)
Round 7: Ch 1, *LP ST in first 2 sts, LP ST dec* repeat around, join (18)
Round 8: Ch 1, LP ST in each st around, join (18)
*Turn your work so the remaining Rounds of SC are right-side out*
Round 9: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join (18)
Round 10: Ch 1, *sc in first 2 sts, sc dec* repeat around, join (14)
Round 11 - 14: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join (14)
Round 15: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join and fasten off (14)

  2. Child  •  Head Circumference = 18" - 20"  •  Hat Circumference = 17.5"  •  Hat Height = 7" - 7.5"

Round 1: Ch 2, make 7 sc in the 2nd chain from hook, join in first sc (7)
Round 2: Ch 1, make 2 LP ST in each st around, join in first LP ST (14)
Round 3: Ch 1, *make 2 sc in first st, sc in next st* repeat around, join (21)
Round 4: Ch 1, *make 2 LP ST in first st, LP ST in next 2 sts* repeat around, join (28)
Round 5: Ch 1, *make 2 sc in first st, sc in next 3 sts* repeat around, join (35)
Round 6: Ch 1, *make 2 LP ST in first st, LP ST in next 4 sts* repeat between * around, join (42)
Round 7: Ch 1, *make 2 sc in first st, sc in next 5 sts* repeat around, join (49)
Round 8: Ch 1, LP ST in first st, *make 2 LP ST in next st, LP ST in next 15 sts* repeat between * around, join (52)
Round 9: Ch 1, LP ST in each st around, join (52)
For Toddler size: Repeat Round 9 until hat measures 7" in length (I stopped at Round 20), do not fasten off, continue with final round below to attach the ears.
For Child size: Repeat Round 9 until hat measures 7.5" in length (Round 21 or so), do not fasten off, continue with final round below to attach the ears.
Final Round: Loosely sl st in first 9 sts, place the flattened end of one ear along the outside of the hat and sl st through all 3 layers 7 times, sl st in the next 20 sts, place the other ear along the hat and sl st 7 times, sl st in next 9 sts, join in first st and fasten off. If you find that slip stitching the ears onto the hat restricts the stretchiness too much, you can sew them on instead. Weave in all ends.

    Adult  •  Head Circumference = 21" - 23"  •  Hat Circumference = 20.5"  •  Hat Height = 8"

Round 8: Ch 1, *make 2 LP St in first st, LP ST in next 6 sts*, repeat around, join (56)
Round 9: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, *make 2 sc in next st, sc in next 8 sts* repeat around, join (62)
Round 10: Ch 1, LP ST in each st around, join (62)
Round 11: Repeat Round 10 until the hat measures approximately 8" in height.
Final Round: Loosely sl st in first 11 sts, place the flattened end of one ear along the outside of the hat and sl st through all 3 layers 7 times, sl st in the next 26 sts, place the other ear along the hat and sl st 7 times, sl st in next 11 sts, join in first st and fasten off. If you find that slip stitching the ears onto the hat restricts the stretchiness too much, you can sew them on instead. Weave in all ends.
