If you match yarn weights for each square of the afghan it will hold together for years of use and washing. Varying weights tend to pull and wear unevenly, leading to damageloss. One solid color throughout is beautiful...2,3, and 4 color combos work well. Multicolor yarn gives a nice confetti effect. With practice you can change colors within the square. Also, wash alone in a front load washer and dryer, limit soap and rinse well. Dry in recommended heat but shorten the time by 5-10 min. and lay out to dry.
