Baby Soft Sheep Toy
This Baby Soft Sheep Toy is just calling your name. Make this little sheep for your small child. It's made with Simply Soft from Caron worked in rounds.
Crochet HookG/6 or 4 mm hook
Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)
Toy measures approximately 9 1/2"/24cm tall x 9 1/2"/24cm long

- Polyester fiberfill
- 2 off-white buttons—1"/25mm diameter
- 2 black buttons—2 3/4"/70mm diameter

STITCHES USED
Chain (ch), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st)
SPECIAL STITCHES
double-loop-st: Wrap yarn around index finger twice and hold behind work, insert hook into indicated stitch and between the yarn wraps and your finger, remove your finger from wraps and draw wraps through stitch (leaving part of each wrap on other side of fabric to form loops), yarn over and draw through all loops on hook. Note: Loops form on side of fabric that is facing away from you.
double-loop-st2tog: [Wrap yarn around index finger twice, insert hook into next stitch and between the yarn wraps and your finger, remove your finger from the wraps and wraps through stitch (leaving part of each wrap on other side of fabric to form loops)] twice, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook.
sc2tog: Single crochet 2 together – Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, (2 loops on hook), insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
NOTES
1. Stuff sheep as work progresses, unless otherwise instructed.
2. Pieces are worked in continuous rounds; do not join and do not turn at end of rounds. Place a marker to indicate beginning of round and move marker up as work progresses.
3. Work tightly so stuffing won't show between stitches.

Sew legs to lower side of body. Stack black buttons on top of white buttons and sew to head. Sew hair to top of head, placing longer loops in front for bangs. Sew ears to top of head. Sew head to front of body. Sew tail to back of sheep, near top of body.
Using yarn needle, weave in all ends.

This adorable little Shaun the Sheep knockoff is sure to please anyone who receives it. The good news about this pattern is that you dont have to go back and add the wool later, but the bad news is there are NO photos or video to explain the Double Loop and Double Loop Together Stitches. The written explanations in the Special Stitches section are okay, but if someone has never worked a Loop stitch, its very hard to visualize.

I secured the legs by inserting a knitting needle up through the bottom center of the leg and then up through the body securing with the needle point cover. Then I sewed the legs on with a double strand of heavy duty thread using a curved upholstery needle. Be careful to go through the "fabric" of the body and not the loops.

I have used this "loop stitch" for over 30 years to make booties. It also works up great on sweaters, but be careful it is easy to snag on. Also the loops make the sweater bulky in shape and will put pounds on you so I tend to stick to making things for the kiddos with this stitch. I found this pattern in a hardback book published in the 40's and the book belonged to my great grandmother.

I think this little sheep is the cutest, however I have the body almost completed and was working on the head, doing exactly the instructions and it is way to large for the body, what am I doing wrong! My grandson is coming into the world in a few days and I want to be able to take this to the hospital with me for him. I have the right amount of sts as I go. Help me out if you can. thank you

Have you tried a smaller hook? I tend to crochet more loosely than the gauge so I have to change to a smaller hook. That usually works for me.

This is really cute, but I would discourage anyone to sew buttons onto a toy for a baby, or under 3 yrs old. It is a choking hazard. I would suggest crocheting or sewing eyes into the pattern, possibly like cross stitch, or crochet the eyes separately but when you sew them on make sure they're on good becuase babies like to chew the things that stick out on a toy.

So adorable, and yet... Trying to make this for my son for Christmas and it's proving somewhat disastrous. Head, tail, legs, ears all fine and cute. I even crocheted eyes to sew on. But the body.. I CANNOT get it to come out without gaping holes! I sewed the head & etc on, hoping to spot-fix the problem, but the head and legs were too heavy; pulled at it and made it worse. This is really discouraging; it was going to be a big present for him. What am I doing wrong??
