Crochet Leaf Stitch Tutorial

While you can make some interesting patterns using basic crochet stitches, i.e. ripples, v-stitch, shells, and so forth, you can also use a series of stitches to create designs of everyday objects in your projects.
In this crochet leaf stitch tutorial, you will learn how to create a leaf pattern using a series of double crochets stitched in the perfect chains and stitches to create an intricate pattern of leaves.
The Best Yarn
The ideal yarn for this stitch would be a light to medium weight yarn. If you were to use a thicker weight yarn your project wouldn’t have a nice drape and the leaf design won’t be as visible. While a solid color works nice, this stitch pattern would also benefit from using a variegated yarn. The stitch would really highlight all the shades and tones in the yarn.
Projects It’s Best For
The stitch works best for projects that require a long foundation chain. Think blanket, a nice shawl or even a lightweight cardigan or sweater. You want to make something that will show off the stitch pattern with a large surface. While the sample for the tutorial below were worked using the minimum foundation chain length and you do see the leaf pattern come to life, as you see in the picture below starting with a longer foundation chain really lets the pattern shine.
How to Work the Leaf Stitch
Start with a foundation chain that is a multiple of 23 plus 3.
Row 1: Chain 4 (after crocheting your foundation chain, add an additional 4 chains to it).
Starting in the 7th chain from the hook double crochet (DC) in the next 9 chains. Chain (Ch) 2, Skip 2 chains, 3 DC in next chain, Ch2, Skip 2 Ch, DC 2 Together (Tog), 3 DC, DC2Tog, Ch2, Skip 2 chains. *DC in next 9 chains, Chain 2, Skip 2 chains, 3 DC in the next chain, Ch2, Skip 2 Ch, DC2Tog, 3 DC, DC2Tog, Ch2, Skip 2 chains. Repeat from * to end of row. DC in the last chain of the row.
Row 2: Chain 4, Turn. *Skip Ch2 space, DC2Tog, 1dc, DC2Tog, Ch2, Skip Ch2 space, 2 DC in next stitch, 1 DC, 2 DC in next stitch, Ch2, Skip Ch2 space, DC2Tog, 5 DC, DC2Tog, Ch2. Repeat from * to end of row. DC in Ch4 space.
Row 3: Chain 4, Turn. *Skip Ch2 space, DC2Tog, 3 DC, DC2Tog, Ch2, 3 DC in Ch2 space, Ch2, 2 DC in next stitch, 3 DC, 2 DC in next stitch, Ch2, Skip Ch2 space, DC3Tog, Ch2. Repeat from * to end of row. DC in Ch4 space.

Row 5: Chain 4, Turn. *Skip Ch2 space, DC3Tog, Ch2, Skip Ch2 space, 2 DC in next stitch, 3 DC, 2 DC in next stitch, Ch2, Skip Ch2 space, 9 DC, Ch2. Repeat from * to end of row. DC in Ch4 space.
Row 6: Chain 4 Turn. *Skip Ch 2 space, DC2Tog, 5 DC, DC2Tog, Ch2, Skip Ch2 space, 2 DC in next stitch, 5 DC, 2 DC in next stitch, Ch2. Repeat from * to end of row. DC in Ch4 space. Please note, for rows that have a foundation chain longer that 23 + 3, you will also need to skip a DC2Tog and an additional Ch2 space when repeating the pattern.
Row 7: Chain 4 Turn. *Skip Ch 2 space, 9 DC, Ch2, 3 DC in Ch2 space, Ch2, DC2Tog, 3 DC, DC2Tog, Ch2. Repeat from * to end of row. DC in Ch4 space.
Repeat rows 2- 7 until you reach your desired length. Fasten off and weave in ends. Depending on the project you are making, you may want to add a border around your project to give it a more finished look.
