Heartland Crochet Shawl

Crochet HookI/9 or 5.5 mm hook
Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

NOTES:
1. Ch 3 at the beginning of a row counts as a dc.
2. Ch 4 at the beginning of a row counts as a dc, ch1.
3. When you get to the end of the rows remember to count the ch 4 from the previous row as a ch 1 space and a dc. I have written instructions out more clearly in row 3 to help you identify these stitches on the following rounds.
4. Starting in row 3, when you are working up the first side and come to the previous row’s 3dc fan. The ch 1’s are counted as chain one spaces in rows 3, 4, 5’s directions.
Special Stitches
3dc fan – (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc) in indicated stitch.
2dc fan – (ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1) in indicated stitch.
SHAWL
Row 1: (With main color) Ch 4, skip 3 ch, 4 dc in very first ch. (5 dc)
Row 2: Ch 4, turn dc in same st as ch 4, ch 1, dc next st, ch 1, 3dc fan in next st, ch 1, dc in next st, ch 1, (dc, ch 1, dc) in last st. (9 dc)
Row 3: Ch 4, turn, dc in first ch 1 sp, *ch 1, dc in next ch 1 sp,* repeat *to* until you reach the center dc of the 3dc fan from the previous row, 2dc fan in the center dc, dc in next ch 1 sp, repeat *to* to the last ch 1, space (the 4th chain of the beginning ch 4 from the previous round) ch 1, dc in ch 1 space, ch 1, dc in last st (the 3rd chain of the beginning ch 4). (12 dc)
Row 4: Ch 4, turn, dc in ch 1 sp, ch 1, *dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1* repeat *to* until you reach the center ch of the 2dc fan from the previous row, 3dc fan in the center ch, ch 1, repeat *to* to the last st of the row, dc in last st. (15 dc)
Row 5: (Change to accent color here if desired) Ch 3, turn, dc in same st, dc in next ch 1 sp, *dc in next st, dc in next ch 1 sp,* repeat *to* until you reach the center dc of the 3dc fan from the previous row, 5 dc in the center dc, dc in next ch 1 sp, repeat *to* to the last st of the row, 2 dc in last st. (35 dc)
Row 6: (Change to main color here if desired) Ch 4, turn, dc in same st as ch 4, ch 1, skip one st, *dc in next st, ch 1, skip one st* repeat *to* until you reach the center dc of the 5 dc group from the previous row, 3dc fan in center dc, ch 1, skip one st, repeat *to* to the last two sts, dc in next st, ch 1, (dc, ch1, dc) in last st. (23 dc)
Repeat rows 3 – 6 until shawl reaches the desired length (measuring across the shoulders), ending with row 5. General estimations are listed below if you want the shawl to reach from fingertip to fingertip:
Toddler: 34”
Small child: 41”
Large child: 48”

Border
Ch 1, turn shawl so that you are working across the top of the shawl, the part that will go across your shoulders, 2hdc in the side of each dc all the way across, 3 hdc in the last dc, ch 1, sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3 from your very last row.
Break yarn, weave in ends.
