Somewhere across the universe, there may be a shawl as pretty as this one--but we haven't seen it. This Across the Galaxy Shawl is the perfect cover-up for any special occasion. The free crochet shawl pattern has a unique design which won't overpower the rest of your ensemble. Floaty and dreamy, it will keep you covered while adding glamor to your outfit. One thing's for sure: this shawl is out of this world.

Crochet Hook4.5 mm hook

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

MATERIALS:

  • Red Heart Luster Sheen: 2 balls 7 Vanilla A and 1 ball 805 Natural B
  • Susan Bates Crochet Hook: 4.5mm [7 US]
  • Yarn needle

SIZE:
Shawl measures 18” wide x 54” long (45.5 x 137 cm)

GAUGE:
1 large motif = 6” (15 cm) in diameter. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

SPECIAL STITCH: beg-Cl (beginning cluster) = Ch 4 (counts as first tr), tr in indicated space. Cl (cluster) = [Yo] twice, insert hook in indicated space, yo and draw up a loop, [yo and pull through 2 loops] twice; [yo] twice, insert hook in same space, yo and draw up a loop, [yo and pull through 2 loops] twice; yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Special Technique
join with sc = Place a slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated space, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.

NOTES:
1. Sha wl is made from ¬¬27 large motifs, arranged into 9 rows of 3 motifs each, and 16 small motifs joined in spaces between large motifs.
2. Each motif is worked in joined rounds with right side facing a t all times.
3. Motifs are joined to neighboring motifs using a “join-as-you-go” technique as the last round is worked.

With A, ch 4.
Round 1 (right side): Work 19 dc in 4th ch from hook (beginning ch count as first dc); join with slip st in top of beginning ch—20 dc.
Round 2: Ch 6 (counts as first tr, ch 2), tr in next dc, [ch 2, tr in next dc] 18 times, ch 2; join with slip st in 4th ch of beginning ch—20 ch-2 spaces
Round 3: Slip st in first ch-2 space, beg-Cl in same ch-2 space, [ch 5, Cl in next ch-2 space] 19 times, ch 5; join with slip st in top of of beg-Cl—20 ch-5 spaces.
Round 4: Slip st in first 3 ch, ch 1, sc in same ch-5 space, [ch 7, sc in next ch-5 space 19 times, ch 3, tr (counts as ch 4 here and throughout) in first sc—20 ch-7 sps. Fasten off.
Round 5: With right side facing, join B with sc in any ch-7 space, [ch 8, sc in next ch-7 space] 19 times, ch 4, tr in first sc—20 ch-8 spaces. Fasten off.

Large Motif #2
Work same as large motif #1 through Round 4—20 ch-7 spaces.
Round 5 (connecting round here and throughout): With right side facing, join B with sc in any ch-7 space, ch 4, slip st in any ch-8 space of previously made large motif, ch 4, sc min next ch-7 space, [ch 4, slip st in next ch-8 space of previously made large motif, ch 4, sc in next ch-7 space] 3 times, [ch 8, sc in next ch-7 space] 15 times, ch 4, tr in first sc—20
ch-8 spaces. Fasten off.

Large Motif #3
Work same as large motif #1 through Round 4—20 ch-7 spaces.

Round 5 (connecting round here and throughout): With right side facing, join B with sc in any ch-7 space, ch 4, working in a clockwise direction, skip first 6 ch-8 spaces from last join of previously made motifs, slip st in next ch-8 space of previously made motif, ch 4, sc in next ch-7 space, [ch 4, slip st in next ch-8 space of previously made large motif, ch 4, sc in next ch-7 space] 3 times, [ch 8, sc in next ch-7 space] 15 times, ch 4, tr in first sc—20 ch-8 spaces.
