If you've never tried crocheting broomstick lace before, this Turquoise Broomstick Scarf is the perfect pattern to test your skills. Follow this easy crochet pattern from Red Heart Yarn to work up this crochet scarf using any color yarn of your choice. Only one ball of worsted weight yarn is needed to complete this free pattern. Crochet HookK/10.5 or 6.5 mm hook

MATERIALS

  • RED HEART® SOFT®: 1 ball 9870: Deep Sea
  • Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 6.5mm [US K-10 ½]
  • Knitting needle: 25mm [Size 50]
  • Yarn needle

GAUGE: 12 sts = 5” (12.5 cm); 9 rows = 8” (20.5 cm) in pattern.
CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge. Gauge

 

SIZE: 5” (12.7 cm) wide by 59¼” (150.5 cm) long.

 

SPECIAL TECHNIQUE
Broomstick Lace:
Broomstick Lace is worked with the right side facing at all times. Do not turn work at the beginning of Broomstick Lace rows. Broomstick Lace is made in two passes. In the first pass, loops are picked up across a row of crochet and placed on the needle. In the second pass, the loops are grouped and worked off of the needle.
Row 1 (first pass – pick up loops): Holding needle in left hand, place last loop of last st on needle. Working from left to right, *insert hook in next st, pull up a loop, place on needle; rep from * across.
Row 2 (second pass – work off loops): Insert hook in number of loops indicated, holding loops together as one, yarn over and loosely pull up a loop, ch 3, (counts as first dc), work number of dc indicated in same set of loops; *inserting hook in next group of loops as indicated, work number of dc indicated in same set of loops; repeat from * across.

NOTE
Scarf is worked with right side facing at all times, do not turn between rows.

SCARF

  1. Ch 14.
  2. Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook and each ch across—12 dc.
  3. Row 2: Work Row 1 for Broomstick Lace, slide all loops off hook—12 loops on needle.
  4. Row 3: Work Row 2 for Broomstick Lace inserting hook in first 2 loops, ch 3, dc in same set of loops, *2 dc in next set of 2 loops; repeat from * across—12 dc.
  5. Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
  6. Row 5: Work Row 2 for Broomstick lace inserting hook in first 3 loops, ch 3, 2 dc in same set of loops, *3 dc in next set of 3 loops; repeat from * across—12 dc.
  7. Row 6: Repeat Row 2.
  8. Row 7: Work Row 2 for Broomstick lace inserting hook in first 4 loops, ch 3, 3 dc in same set of loops, *4 dc in next set of loops; repeat from * across—12 dc.
  9. Row 8: Repeat Row 2.
  10. Row 9: Work Row 2 for Broomstick lace inserting hook in first 6 loops, ch 3, 5 dc in same set of loops, 6 dc in next set of loops—12 dc.
  11. Rows 10–65: Repeat Rows 2–9 seven times.
  12. Rows 66–67: Repeat Rows 2–3 once more.

FIRST SIDE EDGING

  1. Row 1: Pivot to work across log edge of scarf, work 2 sc in each row end across, turn— 134 dc.
  2. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
  3. Row 3: Ch 1, loosely slip st in each st across.
  4. Fasten off.

SECOND SIDE EDGING

  1. Row 1: Working in row ends of opposite side, join yarn with sc in row-end st of Row 1, sc in same sp, 2 sc in each row-end st across, turn—134 dc.
  2. Rows 2–3: Repeat Rows 2–3 of First Side Edging. Fasten off.

FINISHING

  1. Weave in ends. Lightly block if desired.
