Week 1: Supply List and Gauge Swatch
I’m Marie from Underground Crafter and I’m excited to be back for another mystery crochet along on AllFreeCrochet! In this post, I’m including a complete supply list and schedule for the crochet along, along with tips for finding the right tension for this project.
At the end of our crochet along, you will have a lovely accessory that you can wear, gift, or donate!
This is a crochet project that an advanced beginner can complete. To complete this project you’ll need to know:
- Basic crochet stitches including chain, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and slip stitch.
- Crocheting flat in rows including increasing.
Supplies Needed:
- Approximately 900 yards yards (823 meters) in any bulky weight yarn – I used 6 skeins in King Cole Autumn Chunky in 5255 Frozen.
- US Size K-10.5/6.5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
- Yarn needle.
- Stitch markers.
- Tools for measuring and cutting.
Finding the Right Tension:
- Using double crochet, create a swatch approximately 4” (10 cm) square, starting with a crochet hook 1 size larger than what you would usually use for bulky (#5/chunky) weight yarn.
- You can find out more about crochet hook sizes here.
- Exact gauge is not critical for this project.
- Your stitches should create a loose fabric that drapes nicely, but should not have holes or gaps between stitches. Pin your swatch flat without stretching to measure.
- My stitches measured approximately 9.5 dc = 4” (10 cm).
Troubleshooting Your Swatch Gauge:
- If you have fewer stitches in 4” (10 cm) than I have, your stitches are larger than mine. You may want to go down a hook size to a US Size J-10/6 mm hook if your fabric seems too “hole-y.” Or, you can continue with the hook and tension you have, but your project will be larger than the sample and your yarn requirements may be different.
- If you have more stitches in 4” (10 cm) than I have, your stitches are smaller than mine. You may want to go up a hook size to a US Size L-11/8 mm hook if your fabric seems too “stiff.” Or, you can continue with the hook and tension you have, but your project will be smaller than the sample and your yarn requirements may be different.
- You can find out more about gauge in crochet here.

By now, you’ve probably guessed that this is an asymmetrical triangular shawl! My final shawl measurements (before blocking) were 45” (114.5 cm) across the wingspan and 27” (68.5 cm) down the spine. For this shawl to look its best, you may find wet blocking helpful. You can learn more about blocking here.
Optional:
If you’d prefer to wear it as a closed shawl, you can use the chain-1 spaces on the Border Round as buttonholes!
-- You’ll need a sew through button that is large enough not to easily slip through any ch-1 space on the Border Round.
-- Try on the shawl and find a fit that you prefer.
-- Mark the location for a button with a stitch marker.
-- Using yarn and your yarn needle, sew the button in place on the shawl in your marked location.
