Best Yarn for Amigurumi
The best yarn for amigurumi patterns is generally a worsted weight yarn that doesn't stretch, like a cotton or acrylic yarn. Find out why!
It might surprise you to learn that the best yarn type to work up an amigurumi pattern is not a fluffy or cuddly yarn. These types of yarn tend to make it hard to build the shape of your plush pattern and often lead to a ton of crocheting frustration.
Fluffy and cuddly yarns are hard to do more intricate work on which is often required to finish an amigurumi pattern. Fuzzy yarn can also obstruct your view which makes it harder to hook those adorable little details.
The best yarn for amigurumi patterns is generally a worsted weight yarn in either acrylic or cotton. Red Heart acrylic yarn is a tried and true favorite for these types of projects.
This type of yarn is especially important if this is your very first crochet amigurumi pattern. Since crochet amigurumi projects can be a little tough, it is much easier to work with a yarn that tends to behave.

More on the Best Type of Yarn for Crocheting Amigurumi
Types other than worsted weight yarn made of acrylic or cotton can stretch, making it hard to maintain the proper tension as you navigate the sometimes tricky patterns.
Wool yarn can work well for amigurumi patterns, but it isn't recommended. This yarn is often too expensive for these types of projects that either sit on a shelf and see little to no wear and tear or, conversely, are put through the wringer when they become your kiddo's new best buddy. Plus, if you're crocheting a cuddle buddy, the yarn can be itchy.
It is also important to note that smaller crochet hooks are better tools for amigurumi projects, as well. These smaller hooks help you perfect little details.
As always, we recommend following the instructions on your pattern when choosing materials. The pattern designer always knows best.
Note: Looking to make an amigurumi crochet pattern bigger? Try going a size up in yarn!

Our local library just recently added some new craft books and a several of them were strictly amigurumi. I have read over a few of them while crusing the patterns but did not notice the mention of the best type of yarn to use to complete a project. Glad I ran across this as I plan on making a few amigurumi patterns.

I am very surprised to find out that the best yarn to use for amigurumi projects is just plain on acrylic yarn. I have not made amigurumi yet, but it is definitely on my list of things to learn before the end of the year. So glad I have an ample supply of #4 acrylic yarns on hand all of the time.
