Granny Square Corners Jacob's Ladder Afghan
"This project combines both the traditional Granny Square and Jacob's Ladder. Using just the two colors it was created in about one week of evenings. I used hints found on the web for the Jacob's Ladder. If you prefer to use a Magic Circle for your starting point, please feel free. This is a fairly easy project to complete without any memorizing needed. It can also be done with any size yarn and needle that you are comfortable with."

Instructions
Pattern Notes:
- Don’t start each round in corner, sl st in BACK LOOP ONLY to nearest “granny space” on any side after round 2
- When changing colors do not start round in corner
- When climbing Jacob’s ladder, twist the first row to make the first spaces more narrow (see post Climbing Jacob’s Ladder and the Aftermath)
-
Rnd 1: (white) Ch 4. 2dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 2. (3dc, chn 2, in same ch) 3 more times. Join with a sl st to top of beginning ch. Finish off.
Note: when coming to the corners of round 2 and onward the Granny block is done in the last/first dc of the corner, not in the open space (see the arrows in the diagram). -
Rnd 2: (mint) Ch 2, 2dc, ch8, 3dc in first corner, 3dc chn 8, 3dc in each of the next 3 corner spaces. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 2. Sl st in back loop only to the closest granny space.
-
Rnd 3: Having sl st to the first granny space, ch2 2dc, skip to next granny space and 3dc around. 3dc, ch8, 3dc in first corner, 3dc chn 8, 3dc in each of the next 3 corner spaces.
-
Rnd 4: repeat round 3 until you reach your desired size.
I did 4 rounds in mint and 1 in color for a total of 6 rounds of green, 5 of white for size 34” square with edging.
Laddering
To make it easier, after each round of white, I laddered up and held the rungs in place with stitch holders (*the tabs that come off bread - they can easily be written on when you are doing a large project and need to keep a count of what row you are on)
Hold the bottom ladder rung, then push the next up one through that loop and continue to you reach the top.
Edging
-
Rnd 1: (white) Do HDC in each stitch around, 3 into each corner catching the ladder rung with all three stitches
