Surprisingly Simple Christmas Afghan Border
If you want to make a crocheted afghan for Christmas, but just don't have the time it takes to make one, this Surprisingly Simple Christmas Afghan is perfect. This free crochet pattern from Red Heart is actually only for the pom pom edging, which you simply sew onto a festive fleece blanket. This semi-homemade crochet afghan pattern is a fast and easy way to decorate your home for the holidays without spending much time, effort, or money.
Crochet HookI/9 or 5.5 mm hook
Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)
MATERIALS:
- RED HEART® Super Saver®: 1 skein 311 White A.
- RED HEART® Spark-a-Doodle™: 2 balls each 9901 Reddy B and 9368 Shamrock C.
- Crochet Hook: 5.5mm [US I-9].
- Yarn needle
- Purchased blanket-weight fleece cut to 43” x 54”
- Sewing needle
- Thread and scissors
SIZE:
Edging measures 3” wide.
GAUGE: 12 sts = 4” in pattern. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
PREPARE BLANKET:
Round corners of fleece fabric by placing a bowl at each corner and marking the curved outline. Cut on marking lines.
EDGING FOUNDATION
Row 1 (Wrong Side): With A, ch 4, (6 dc, ch 3, slip st) all in 4th ch from hook; turn.
Row 2: Ch 3, (6 dc, ch 3, slip st) all over last ch-3 of previous row; turn.
Repeat Row 2 until edging fits around outer edge of blanket. Fasten off.
SIDE EDGINGS
Note: For best results when using Spark-A-Doodle yarn, work with the yarn between the pom poms and do not pull the pom pom through the stitch on the needle.
Row 1: With wrong side facing, join B in top of first ch-3; ch 1, sc in same st, * sc in next 6 dc **, sc in next slip st, sc over next ch-3; repeat from * across end at **. Fasten off.
Row 2: With wrong side facing, join C in first st on opposite long edge; ch 1, sc in same st; sc in each dc, slip st and ch-3 across. Fasten off.
FINISHING
Sew ends of edging together. Weave in ends. Sew edging around blanket, using sewing needle and thread.
